Chekek Kuru Curry ( Jackfruit Seed Curry )

Chekek Kuru Curry is a popular dish in South Indian cuisine, originating from the state of Karnataka. It is made with the seeds of ripe jackfruit, which are known as Chekek Kuru in Kannada language.

Ingredients:

  1. 500 gm Jackfruit seeds, peeled and chopped
  2. 1 Onion, chopped
  3. 2 Tomatoes, chopped
  4. 2 Green chillies, chopped
  5. 2 Garlic cloves, chopped
  6. 1 inch Ginger, chopped
  7. 1 tsp Coriander powder
  8. 1 tsp Cumin powder
  9. 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  10. 1 tsp Red chilli powder
  11. Salt to taste
  12. 1 tsp Sugar
  13. 2 tbsp Oil
  14. 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  15. 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  16. A few Curry leaves
  17. 1 tsp Lemon juice
  18. Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (optional)

Instructions:

In a pressure cooker, add the chopped jackfruit seeds, salt, 1 cup of water and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.

In a separate pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and curry leaves. Once they start to crackle, add chopped onion, green chillies, ginger and garlic. Cook until the onions are soft and translucent.

Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they are soft and mushy.

Add coriander powder, cumin powder, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and sugar. Mix well.

Add the cooked jackfruit seeds to the pan and mix well.

Add water as required and let the curry simmer for 5-7 minutes.

Turn off the heat and add lemon juice. Mix well.

Serve hot with rice or roti, garnished with fresh coriander leaves (optional).
