Chakkuli

Chakkuli is a type of traditional Indian snack that is crispy and crunchy in texture. It is also known as Uddina Hittu or Urad Dal Puri and is usually enjoyed with a cup of tea or coffee. The origin of Chakkuli is believed to be from the southern state of Karnataka in India.

The following ingredients are typically used to make Chakkuli:

  1. 1 cup urad dal (split black lentils)
  2. 2 tbsp rice flour
  3. Salt to taste
  4. Oil for frying

Here is a recipe for making Chakkuli:

Wash and soak the urad dal in water for 4-5 hours or overnight. Drain the water and grind the dal into a smooth batter using a wet grinder or a food processor.

Add the rice flour, salt, and enough water to the batter to make it of a dropping consistency. Mix well.

Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.

Using a spoon or your fingers, drop small portions of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the Chakkuli on both sides until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.

Drain the Chakkuli on paper towels to remove any excess oil.

Serve the Chakkuli hot or warm with a cup of tea or coffee, or as a snack on its own.

In terms of preservatives, Chakkuli can be stored in an airtight container for several days at room temperature, although the texture and taste may change over time. To maintain the freshness and crispiness of the Chakkuli, it is best to consume it within a day or two of frying.

This snack is a popular and beloved treat in South India and is known for its light and crunchy texture, as well as its mild flavor. It is a great option for snacking or as an accompaniment to a hot drink.
