A World Tour of Iced Coffee: Discovering the Most Popular Orders Across the Globe
For many, coffee is an essential part of travel. Some are so devoted that they'll brew their own espresso at the airport or pack an AeroPress for the journey. One of my favorite summer vacation activities, however, is finding a local café and enjoying an iced coffee with a pastry.
Yet, venturing away from your go-to coffee shop can present a dilemma: what to order? Should you stick with your usual and hope it tastes familiar, or choose something at random and hope it meets your preferences? Here's a tip: order like the locals.
A recent study by Coffeeness explored which iced or chilled coffee drinks are most popular in different countries. By analyzing Google search data in both English and native languages, the study identified the favorite chilled coffee in each country where data was available.
The reigning champion of cold coffee drinks globally is the frappe. Originating from France, this beverage combines espresso shots with cold water, cold milk, sugar, and ice cubes. It's the top choice in 35 countries, including Albania, Argentina, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Estonia, Italy, Kenya, Mauritius, and Nicaragua. So, if you're in any of these 35 countries, ordering a frappe is a safe bet.
The iced vanilla latte holds the second spot as the most popular iced coffee worldwide. It tops the charts in 14 countries, such as Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Luxembourg, Iceland, New Zealand, the US, and the UK. As a fan of the iced vanilla latte, I can assure you that it's a reliable choice, whether you're exploring a new continent or just grabbing a coffee on a dreary workday.
Following the iced vanilla latte are the frappuccino, cold brew, and Spanish latte. The Spanish latte, made with espresso and sweetened condensed milk, is the favorite in Malaysia, Oman, Singapore, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Two other notable drinks each dominate in two countries: the Eiskaffee and the Mazagran. Eiskaffee, which simply means iced coffee in German, is the top choice in Austria and Germany. Mazagran, a cold, sweet coffee drink invented in Algeria, is most popular in Portugal and France and is considered by some historians to be the original iced coffee.
While this study doesn't cover every possible iced coffee option worldwide, it provides a fantastic starting point for your next vacation coffee adventure. So go ahead, try a Mazagran or another local favorite. After all, discovering new flavors is what traveling is all about.
