Igguthappa

A temple by King Lingaraja in 1810.  Carved out of solid silver, with fine etchings in Old Kannada script, the elephant in the temple was gifted by Lingraja, the ruler of Coorg to atone for shooting some elephant. Another interesting festival is the Tula-bhara, where devotees place themselves on giant scales and donate an equivalent weight of grains to the temple. All visitors are given a three-course meal of payasam, Rice, and 2 types of sambar with wild mango pickle to boot. Worshipped as the 'One who gives Grain' (iggu is Kodava for 'grain', thappa means 'to give'), Igguthappa is the local Rain-God.
